The Spam Nightmare
Granted my site get’s low volume traffic somewhere around 250-300 a day, so spam was not too big of a problem! I am able to keep up with my few subscribers comments on a personal level. That was until about two months ago when spam bots started leaving 350-600 comments a day – no fun! Just not enough time to go through that amount of spam looking for the legit comments and i was bummed…….
Wikipedia defines these nasty creature on the web as “A spambot is an automated computer program designed to assist in the sending of spam. Spambots usually create fake accounts and send spam using them, although it would be obvious that a spambot is sending it. Some spambots, however, can crack passwords and send spam using other people’s accounts.“
Comment Spam Bots
Software that crawls around the Internet looking for open comments and then leaves some ridiculous comments with links back to what ever they are selling. As i stated earlier it is annoying and time consuming, not to mention unproductive toying with fake comments, when all you really want is to be interactive with your visitors. Meeting people from all over the World and seeing things from a different point of view is one of the BEST parts to Blog.
After testing every Anti-Spam plugin compatible with my version of wordpress nothing came close to eliminating the Comment Spam Bots like G.A.S.P. (GrowMapAnti-Spam Protection) by Andy Bailey. There are a lot of time saving great plugins for wordpress, but this one made my New Year so far! Now i can get back to my subscribers, when they are nice enough to take time out of there day to leave a genuine comment or concern….
Now no Spam Blocker alone catches 100% of the trash thrown at your blog, using a combination of plugins like Askimet and will go along way towards protecting your hard work. I must admit that of all the plugins tried, some seemed to invite more spam, maybe the codes were cracked i am not sure. And Growmap never came up in my search, so how did i know about it? Easy Ancient Chinese Secret- no just kidding. I went over to one of my favorite blogs dukeo and read plus asked questions, which Sté Kerwer was quick to answer-we thank you much!
